Dvarapalas are guardians of Hindu, Buddhist, or Jain temples. They stand to each side of a doorway and protect the sacred interior of the temple from inappropriate intruders. This nineteenth-century example made of painted wood carries a serpent-wrapped club. It probably stood outside a Saivite temple (one dedicated to the Hindu god Siva). |
